# Trump Raises Possibility of Third Presidential Term, Says "Not a Joke"
Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, has left the door open for a potential third-term bid, stating that the idea is “not a joke.”
In a phone interview with NBC News on the 30th (local time), Trump was asked if he desired a third term. He responded, “I like working,” adding weight to the speculation.
“It’s not a joke,” Trump emphasized. However, he tempered the statement, saying, “But I do think it’s too early to talk about that yet.”
Under the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, presidents are prohibited from serving more than two terms. When questioned about whether he has a plan to challenge this limitation, Trump affirmed, “There is a way to make it happen.”
# Exploring Hypothetical Scenarios
When asked about the possibility of Vice President J.D. Vance running for president and then passing the position back to Trump, he acknowledged, “That’s one way,” but added, “There are other ways, too.”
Pressed on what those other ways might be, Trump briefly replied, “There aren’t any.”
Despite his enigmatic responses, Trump claimed that many people want him to run for a third term. “But fundamentally, I always say that I still have a long way to go. It’s because we are still in the early stages of this administration,” he noted.
# Constitutional Hurdles to a Third Term
For the term limit to be removed via a constitutional amendment, there are two possible paths. Either two-thirds of Congress would have to support the motion or two-thirds of the states would need to convene a constitutional convention to propose the change. In either case, any amendment would then require ratification by at least 75% of the nation's 50 states.
# Third-Term Speculation: A Familiar Theme for Trump
Trump has repeatedly hinted at a potential third-term bid in past remarks. Speaking to a crowd at the White House last month, he asked, “Should I run again? Let me know.”
On St. Patrick’s Day, during a congressional luncheon on March 12, Trump joked, “I hope to attend at least three more of these events.” He added, “Whenever I say ‘at least,’ they [the press] lose their minds.” This statement, delivered in typical Trump style, blended humor with a dose of ambiguity.
While constitutional processes create significant obstacles to a third presidential term, Trump’s remarks continue to fuel speculation about his political ambitions and keep his name at the forefront of the conversation.
