# Bitcoin Faces Challenges in DeFi Integration, New 'Build On Bitcoin' Initiative Aims to Bridge Gap
Bitcoin, renowned for its robust security and reliability, has yet to find significant utility within the existing DeFi (Decentralized Finance) ecosystem. The absence of trusted bridging technologies and smart contract functionalities has posed difficulties for both institutional and individual investors in leveraging Bitcoin within DeFi.
Efforts are underway to expand Bitcoin’s capabilities and strengthen its linkage with DeFi. A recent interview on the Epicenter Podcast highlighted the 'BOB (Build On Bitcoin)' project, aimed at integrating Bitcoin with DeFi.
# Bitcoin Layer 2 'BOB' to Incorporate Ethereum's Smart Contract Features
BOB is a hybrid Layer 2 solution designed to maintain Bitcoin's security while allowing the utilization of Ethereum’s smart contract functionalities. This solution operates by combining zero-knowledge proof (ZK) technology, Bitcoin staking, and Ethereum data availability.
The core technology of BOB employs a rollup mechanism, processing on-chain transactions off-chain before recording them on the Bitcoin and Ethereum blockchains. This structure enhances transaction speeds and reduces fees compared to the existing Bitcoin network.
Alexei Zamyatin, co-founder of BOB, stated, "DeFi using only the Bitcoin network relied on centralized bridges due to technical limitations. BOB overcomes these constraints by providing more reliable on-chain Bitcoin utilization methods."
# A New Paradigm in Connecting Bitcoin and DeFi
Currently, utilizing Bitcoin within other chain DeFi ecosystems requires centralized custodian mediation. Criticisms have been raised against wrapped Bitcoins like WBTC (Wrapped Bitcoin) and cbBTC (Coinbase Wrapped Bitcoin) for relying inherently on centralized custodians, diverging from the essence of decentralization.
To address this, BOB is developing a decentralized bridge using BitVM, similar to Ethereum's Optimistic Rollup. BitVM provides verifiable proofs on the Bitcoin network, enabling secure transactions without centralized bridge operators' involvement.
BOB’s design ensures that Bitcoin holders can use their assets in DeFi without any intermediaries. Utilizing ZK protocols, the project aims to maximize interoperability between the Bitcoin and Ethereum networks, significantly enhancing security compared to traditional centralized bridge models.
# Bitcoin DeFi Market Poised for Significant Growth
Despite Bitcoin's dominance, holding the largest market capitalization in the cryptocurrency market, its application within DeFi has been relatively underutilized. The Bitcoin market capitalization stands at approximately $2 trillion, yet less than 1% is estimated to be used in DeFi.
However, the expanding Bitcoin-based DeFi ecosystem indicates a likely increase in Bitcoin’s utility. Advancements in Layer 2 solutions and decentralized bridge technologies are expected to accelerate this growth.
Alexei Zamyatin noted, "The liquidity of Bitcoin moving into the DeFi market is only a matter of time. With the introduction of Layer 2 solutions like BOB, diverse financial services such as lending, trading, and staking using Bitcoin will emerge."
BOB is currently in its testnet phase, targeting a mainnet launch in 2025. The project aims to collaborate with various Ethereum-based DeFi projects to establish new standards for using Bitcoin in DeFi.
The growth of the Bitcoin DeFi market represents a critical turning point, extending Bitcoin’s role from a store of value to a foundational component of a functional financial system.
