# SK Telecom Pledges Comprehensive Coverage for Losses Despite SIM Protection Service Subscription SK Telecom announced on the 27th that it will assume full responsibility for any user damages occurring despite subscriptions to its SIM Protection Service. This announcement followed directives from Acting President Han Duck-soo regarding a recent hacking incident. The company is working with the Ministry of Science and ICT to devise additional countermeasures. "SIM Protection Service provides the same preventive effect as SIM replacement for damage prevention," stated an SK Telecom representative. "We promise to guarantee its safety and accept responsibility if unauthorized SIM cloning causes damages after service registration." As of 4:00 PM on the same day, the service had 5.54 million subscribers, representing approximately 24% of SK Telecom's 23 million total subscribers. # Collaborative Measures to Combat Illegal SIM Cloning Introduced in 2023 in collaboration with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Cyber Investigation Unit, the SIM Protection Service aims to prevent unauthorized SIM cloning damages. Even if a customer's SIM data is stolen or duplicated, the service blocks unauthorized access to communication services using the customer’s identity on other devices. SK Telecom emphasized the service's advanced security capabilities and reiterated its commitment to preventing fraudulent activities. # Free SIM Replacement and Enhanced Measures for Travelers Starting at 10:00 AM on the 28th, SK Telecom will offer free SIM replacements at over 2,600 T World stores nationwide. Recognizing potential high demand at physical locations, the company has also launched an online reservation system. SK Telecom currently holds about 1 million SIM cards and plans to secure an additional 5 million by the end of May. The company committed to continuously procuring more SIM cards in accordance with customer demand. For international travelers, SK Telecom will ensure seamless SIM replacements at airport roaming centers to address illegal SIM cloning concerns abroad. However, the company acknowledged that the SIM Protection Service currently does not support concurrent roaming plans. It promised to enhance the service by next month to make it compatible with roaming packages. # Strengthened Airport Support Amid Escalating Concerns In partnership with the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, additional booths will be set up at international airports to assist with SIM replacements. SK Telecom is also in discussions with Incheon International Airport, the busiest departure hub, to expand staffing at roaming centers by 50% to better assist customers. Should customers experience illegal SIM cloning while abroad due to an inability to replace their SIMs before departure, SK Telecom pledged full responsibility for any resulting damages. # Bolstered Accountability Following Cyber Incidents SK Telecom apologized to customers for the inconveniences caused by the cyber intrusion and affirmed its commitment to addressing customer concerns swiftly. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Science and ICT, working with a government-private joint investigation team, is rigorously investigating the incident's root cause. The findings will be transparently disclosed to the public to ensure accountability and resolution.
